Depending on the type and severity of the disability, interventions, and current technologies may be used to help the individual learn strategies that will foster future success Children learn language skills by following this hierarchical development. Each successive skill is built upon a firm foundation of preceding abilities. It is usually expected, for example, that a child will acquire adequate listening skills prior to developing the expressive skills of speaking. The focus on learning disabilities and the provision of accommodation in schools fails to acknowledge that people have a range of strengths and weaknesses, placing undue emphasis on academic success thereby making people receive additional support in this arena but not in music or sports.
