THE PREVALENCE OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IN AKWA IBOM STATE: INVESTIGATING THE STRATEGIC WAYS OF ADOPTING ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN PREVENTING VIOLENCE FOR A SAFE SOCIETY
ABSTRACT
This study examined the prevalence of domestic violence in Akwa Ibom State, investigating the strategic ways of adopting artificial intelligence in preventing violence for a safe society. To carry out the study, descriptive survey design was adopted. The study was carried out in Akwa Ibom State. The targeted population for the study comprised of all the Social Scientists in Akwa Ibom State. A simple random sampling technique was used to select a total of 120 Social Scientists, which formed the sample size for this study. The instrument used for data collection was a structured questionnaire titled “Artificial Intelligence Aided Domestic Violence Prevention Questionnaire (AIADVPQ)”. Face and content validation of the instrument was carried out by an expert in test, measurement, and evaluation in order to ensure that the instrument has the accuracy, appropriateness, and completeness for the study under consideration. The reliability coefficient obtained was 0.89, and this was high enough to justify the use of the instrument. The researcher subjected the data generated for this study to appropriate statistical technique such descriptive statistics to answer research questions. The study showed that the highest percentage (31.67%) of the types of domestic violence on victims was recorded for “Emotional and Psychological Abuse”. It was also observed that the highest percentage (24.17%) of the effects of domestic violence on victims was recorded for “Psychological and Emotional Effects”. The study concluded that addressing domestic violence in Akwa Ibom State requires urgent and innovative solutions, as many victims remain trapped in cycles of abuse due to fear, stigma, and inadequate intervention. One of the recommendations made was that government and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) should develop and deploy AI-powered chatbots and virtual assistants to provide victims with confidential and accessible reporting platforms.
