CHURCH COUNSELING PROGRAMS AND ITS POTENCY IN RETAINING OLD MEMBERS AND GETTING NEW MEMBERS FOR CHURCH GROWTH AND EXPANSION: THE COMMUNICATION IMPLICATIONS.

ABSTRACT

This study examined the potency of church counseling programs in retaining old members, attracting new members, and promoting church growth and expansion. Church counseling programs have become an essential ministry within contemporary churches due to the increasing emotional, social, spiritual, and psychological challenges faced by individuals and families. The study explored the concepts of counseling, church counseling, and church counseling programs, highlighting various counseling services such as marriage counseling, family counseling, youth counseling, grief and bereavement counseling, and addiction counseling. The study further investigated the effects of these counseling programs on member retention, newcomer assimilation, and overall church development. Findings revealed that church counseling programs strengthen members' sense of belonging, enhance spiritual growth and commitment, resolve personal and family conflicts, improve member satisfaction and loyalty, and significantly reduce member attrition. The study also found that counseling programs help new members integrate into the church community by providing emotional support, spiritual guidance, and clear pathways for participation. Furthermore, church counseling ministries contribute to church growth and expansion by strengthening family relationships, promoting mental and spiritual well-being, enhancing evangelism efforts, and fostering long-term commitment among members. The study concluded that effective church counseling programs serve as strategic tools for sustaining church membership, attracting new converts, and facilitating numerical and spiritual growth. One of the recommendations made was that churches should establish well-structured counseling departments staffed by trained pastoral counselors and qualified Christian counselors to address members' emotional, psychological, and spiritual needs effectively.
